Alliance annual inspection
I was hoping to complete the annual inspection today (Friday 13th) but there are still one or two things left to do. Unfortunately I have other commitments Saturday and I am rostered BI on Sunday, so it might not get completed this weekend. The weekend forecast is not good, so I'll work on it Sunday...

Alliance vario
The front seat WInter vario was prone to getting stuck at +10 kts. Today Tim Fox changed it for a PZL one that we had. It seems OK now but let someone know if you find any problems.

Re: Trestles and hangar packing
More instances of bad hangar packing and potential damage spotted; Morning of Sunday 27th April, JAD wing resting on EAF wing.jpg The trailing edge of JAD's wing was resting on the wing of the Astir. Wingtip clear of floor.jpg The wing tip was clear of the floor so a little movement by JAD could eas...

Re: G-DJAD radio problems
There were several flights in JAD on Sunday 12th. The radio worked fine all day, Stuart receiving Tx readability 5 from the launch point handheld when over 4,000 ft. Squelch is still set to 3, which is acceptable, although it would be nice to tame the interference completely and wind the squelch bac...

Re: G-DJAD radio problems
Hi Trevor, Thanks for your interest and comments. There are already 2 ferrite suppressors fitted to the Flarm power feed. To get a bit more technical, the interference is being generated by the switching power converter in the Flarm. I noticed that the +ve power wire seemed to be 'hotter' (i.e. more...

G-DJAD radio problems
JAD's radio reception has been poor for a while and I spent some time this week trying to diagnose the cause. Two issues had been reported, an excessive level of interference, and poor sensitivity unless the transmitting radio was close by. Some pilots have reported distorted or unintelligible recep...

Alliance PTT unreliable
The rear seat push-to-talk switch on the stick is unreliable. The tech team will sort it when we can, meanwhile check that 'Tx' is illuminated on the radio to confirm you are transmitting. It may be necessary to try pressing the button part way to get it to work. The front seat PTT is working proper...

Trestles and hangar packing
Please do not wedge trestles tightly under wings in the hangar; they can cause dents in the wings. Especially so with the wooden trestles that only have a thin layer of carpet to spread the load. The two new, yellow metal wing stands are much better padded, better to use them whenever possible. Idea...

Discus tail dolly
The Discus's tail dolly has been given some new latches and a lick of paint.
The bin liner fuselage wrap is to prevent any Evostik that leaches from the felt sticking to the glider.
It will be fine by Friday, just bin the bin liner.

Using G-CJZB's variometer
I wrote this note explaining how to use the LX166 variometer for the Portmoak expedition earlier this year. It might be of use to others. The audio tone volume can only be set from the front seat. If you are flying a passenger, having the tone sounding all the time you are waiting on the ground is a...

Tall, yellow wing stands
The Club now owns a pair of heavy duty IMI wing stands. They have a dual use, take them in the DG505 trailer for a retrieve or when it is away, otherwise leave them in the hangar and use them rather than trestles when hangar packing. They are taller than trestles and well padded, so kinder to wing s...

What's going on with the Alliance?
The Alliance has been out of service since the 26th October and I thought members might like to know what has been going on with it. Firstly, there were reports of unintended canopy jettison or near-jettison on at least two occasions. The red knobs on the right hand side of the cockpits were found t...

DG505 G-CJZB Annual Inspection w/c 6th March
Greetings, the DG is to have its annual inspection next week. Unless there are any hold-ups it should be back on line for the Friday. Depending on the weekend weather and flying, we will de-rig on Sunday after flying or sooner if weather dictates. This will need a team of 6 for safety, please do hel...
