Dear Members
The Borders Gliding Club Discus.
The Discus (G-DJAH) now belongs to the Club and will be available to Club members from Saturday 25th September. Your Committee has thought about how to get the best out of this exciting new glider and this note is intended to set the scene for how we see it being used. This will be kept under review.
The main purpose of the Discus is to give members who do not have their own aircraft access to a well equipped glider which will hopefully allow them to develop their gliding career and aspire to reach new goals which have not previously been possible.
In the first few months of operating this aircraft, The Committee / CFI have agreed that permission to fly it will be totally at the discretion of the CFI who will sign the pilot’s logbook to that effect. The following are some general guidelines for eligibility to fly the Discus.
General Guidelines
To fly locally; Bronze badge and 75 hours in total.
To fly cross country; An XC endorsement, (legal requirement).
These guidelines will be subject to a rolling review. They are Guidelines, and as such the CFI can flex them up and down depending on the abilities and experience of individual pilots. Talk to the CFI if you want to fly the Discus.
The Discus will, for the time being, be exclusively available to Full and Country members of the BGC. Visitors during the forthcoming Wave Weeks will not have access to the glider.
The aircraft will not be used for free Instructor flying.
The aircraft is equipped with an oxygen system so now FL240 is your goal! The Club recognises that proper use of the oxygen system is essential - your life will depend on it. Training in the safe use of oxygen will be provided in due course.
Consideration is being given to allow the Discus to be booked for extended periods to allow tasks to be undertaken without the concern about being called back after an hour. More will follow on this topic.
All members are encouraged to make good use of the Discus either now or as they gain experience in the future.
