OFCOM’s new Aeronautical Radio Licence condition

You may have read in the aviation press or been sent a note by OFCOM (the regulatory body that administers radio communications in the UK) that all Aeronautical Licence holders now need comply with a new licence condition. This is intended to protect the general public from exposure to Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) being emitted from radio antennas.

The attached document from OFCOM, recently published on the BGA website, describes what you need to do. In most cases for GA aircraft, it will simply be a matter of verifying that you don’t need to comply with this new requirement! None of the Club Gliders or any handheld radio needs to comply as they do not transmit enough power. I expect all private gliders will be the same but you should check.

If you fall within the limits given in the OFCOM document you don’t need to do anything (except keep a note with your licence that you have checked and determined that you don’t need to comply).

Note that you have until 18 November 2021 to check the position with your radio equipment.

Let me know if you need any help with this new OFCOM licence condition.
