Update on the Astir G-DEAF

Post by TimF » Tue Nov 14, 2023 6:32 pm

I reported back in May that we had found some problems in the left wing for which guidance from the Design Authority in Germany (Lindner) would be required. After a series or emails and submission of detailed inspection report, the conclusion was that the problem was of a “cosmetic” nature but that it should be repaired. This is very similar to a problem encountered with the K21 some years ago and required the same kind of repair. Whilst not difficult, the repair carried some risk as it was near the main wing spar. Russell Hardcastle, a very experienced fibreglass repairer, was able to assist and the repair was completed in early September.

What followed was an extensive period of surface improvements to the fuselage, wings and tailplane. This involved application of new gelcoat and filler and rubbing down (multiple times) and repainting. Most of the aircraft has now been polished and waxed to bring back the shine and protect the surface. There have been a number of improvements to the cockpit area which were badly needed including replacement of the rear battery shelf and the stick gaiter.

The aircraft has now been re-inspected, a new ARC issued and is “released to service”. On Saturday 11th November Ian Surley took the aircraft for its check flight. Although this was largely successful, Ian reported that the aileron control felt somewhat stiffer than he expected. Another opinion will be sought and it is possible that some further investigation will be required to identify if there is a problem in this area. Until this is resolved, the aircraft will NOT be available for general club use. I’ll post another update when the all clear is given.

Getting the aircraft back in the air after finding the initial problem of the detached support rib inside the fuselage, has taken much longer than we originally thought. It has involved considerable work from many people. I would like to thank Barry for his work on repairing the detached support rib (which also involved building a heated enclosure around the repaired area to cure the resin), together with lots of help along the way with new gel coat and polishing. Also Barry’s wife, Linda, did a lot of cleaning and polishing. Barry’s sister, Wendy, made the new stick gaiter. Thanks to both of them as well.

Ian has carried out the inspection work and been involved in most of the surface restoration activity; a task stretching over many weeks. He has also spent considerable time at home dealing with the required paperwork necessary to get the aircraft ready for flight. All this while taking visitors on Air Experience flights and playing a significant part in keeping the tugs flying. Thanks Ian for all your dedication to keeping the Club operational!
